DraftKings Under Fire for Releasing Insensitive 9/11 Parlay

DraftKings released a ‘Never Forget’ parlay to commemorate 9/11.
The operator pulled the bet after receiving plenty of criticism on social media.
DraftKings offered +651 odds for three New York teams to win on September 11.

NEW YORK – DraftKings Sportsbook made a poor attempt to commemorate the September 11 terrorist attacks. A special parlay titled ‘Never Forget’ offered a three-team parlay for the NY Mets, Yankees, and Jets. For the bet to win, all three had to win their respective games on Monday night.

The legal New York sports betting operator is receiving backlash on Twitter for their poor decision to release the ‘Never Forget’ parlay. DraftKings issued a public apology and sent a statement to The Boston Globe.

“We sincerely apologize for the featured parlay that was shared briefly in commemoration of 9/11. We respect the significance of this day for our country and especially for the familys of those who were directly affected.”

Losing Value

The featured parlay was only up for a short amount of time. Still, over 800 people managed to bet on it before DraftKings took it down. Many companies and leagues commemorated the tragic September 11 attacks. But, DraftKings made possibly the worst attempt of honoring those who lost their lives.

DraftKings is one of four legal sports betting partners of the NFL. The poor decision to release the 9/11 parlay could potentially jeopardize their partnership with the biggest brand in the world.

It’s a bad look for the NFL, who released tributes on social media while their sports betting partner offered an under the odds 9/11 parlay. Whereas the special listed +651 odds, the value of making a parlay with these three bets sat closer to +697 odds.

While DraftKings took this Never Forget approach, the NFL tweeted differently.

“Today, we remember those impacted in the 9/11 attacks 22 years ago, along with the many rescue and recovery workers who came to the aid of those in need, and members of our military who helped defend our nation.”

After the backlash, DraftKings News tweeted an apology.
